Gladstone’s Library – business resilience planning

Gladstone’s Library – business resilience planning

Client: Gladstone’s Library
Gladstone’s Library is located in Hawarden, Flintshire and is the UK’s only Prime Ministerial library. The library is Grade I listed. Gladstone’s Library is a nationally important residential library and archive with an active programme of education and outreach activities alongside an annual calendar of events. Gladstone’s Library incorporates 26 bedrooms, a popular restaurant (Food for Thought), a guest lounge, conference facilities, meeting spaces and attractive external grounds.

Planning Solutions Consulting was commissioned to work closely with the Warden and Senior Management Team to prepare a business resilience plan – helping to identify unrestricted income generating opportunities. It was critical that the options fitted with key charitable objects of Gladstone’s Library.  The work was funded by the Heritage Fund.

Developing the business resilience plan involved an analysis of the current operation, review of the market place in terms of key trends, challenges and opportunities (ensuring future options responded to market needs). This was coupled with ongoing engagement with onsite staff and an analysis of five case examples. A longlist of income generating options were identified and a scoring matrix was used to assess the options to identify the lead opportunities to take forward.
