Seafront Destination Development Masterplan, Hayling Island, Havant Borough Council

Hayling Island 1Client: Havant Borough Council and Tourism South East
Working in a multi-disciplinary team (architects and landscape architects), we produced a destination masterplan for the Hayling Island seafront area to support the development of Hayling Island as a tourist destination. Part of the study area are designated including – SSSIs, Site of Nature Conservation Interest, Local Nature Reserves, Special Area of Conservation, SPA and Ramsar sites. The coastal strip is facing on challenges related to climate change and rising sea levels. Hayling Island is a popular centre for watersports including kite surfing, sailing and windsurfing and there has been a lack of investment in the seafront tourism product.

Our work focussed on carrying out extensive consultation exercise to develop a vision and agree investment priorities, site reviews along the whole stretch of coast, understanding the latest market trends within the leisure and tourism sectors and advising on the commercial development opportunities and delivery structures to regenerate the tourism product. The destination masterplan identified key investment opportunities and ‘hub’ sites to minimise the environmental impact along the coastal area, which could be developed as funding becomes available on a phased basis to create a mixed economy development model with year-round appeal, helping to reduce issues of seasonal visitation patterns.
