Planning Solutions Consulting is a specialist visitor experience and tourism consultancy working with reservoir owners and others across the UK. We have worked with clients including Severn Trent, South West Water, and the Markerstudy Group to assess opportunities to develop visitor, leisure, and tourism products at reservoirs – from visitor centres and cafes through to overnight accommodation, mountain biking, and water sports.

What our reservoir consultancy covers

Our reservoir consultancy work is usually focused on:

• Market assessments and option appraisals to identify preferred development scenarios for proposed reservoir sites
• Reviewing existing operations to identify and evaluate opportunities for enhancing the visitor experience or leisure offer, increasing visitor numbers and earned revenue
• Developing visitor management plans for ‘honeypot’ sites
• Preparing the supporting business plan to test the financial viability of a development scheme and help secure development funding

Projects we have worked on

• Severn Trent: Commissioned to review the visitor experience masterplan being developed for one of Severn Trent’s leading recreational sites
• Water Company: Commissioned to advise on preparing a development strategy to introduce visitor accommodation, which was used to secure planning permission at a reservoir site
• North Northamptonshire Council:  We prepared development plans for Sywell Country Park, which has been developed around a reservoir
• Link for Life: Developed a vision and supporting development plan with financial analysis for Lake Country Park project, which incorporates a water sports centre developed around a reservoir
• Marker Study Group: Commissioned to identify and evaluate opportunities to develop the visitor offer in an appropriate and sustainable way at Bewl Water

Watersports and Activity Tourism Experience

Alongside our reservoir work, we have also delivered watersports and activity tourism projects at sites including Stanley Park in Blackpool, the two residential activity centres in Gower, Tŷ Rhossili and Tŷ Borfa, Calshot Activities Centre in Hampshire, and Afan Forest Park (mountain biking).

Practical, operator-led experience

Our sister company, Planning Solutions Limited, invests in and manages a number of visitor experiences, giving our reservoir consultancy work a genuinely operational grounding. These include the Cotswold Beach and Country Park watersports destination, CONKERS, a 120-acre woodland experience with two visitor centres in the National Forest, Kent Life heritage farm park in Maidstone.  Each with catering, retail, event and education programmes.
