Fort Road Recreation Ground Masterplan

recreation ground masterplanClient: Lewes District Council

Working with landscape architects, The terra firm Consultancy, we were commissioned to prepare a masterplan for Fort Road Recreation Ground in Newhaven. The recreation ground incorporates sports pitches, a BMX pump track, skatepark, tennis courts, children’s play area, MUGA, outdoor gym and Scout Hut.  The Fort Road Recreation Ground was gifted to Newhaven by the 3rd Earl of Sheffield in 1889, was requisitioned by the Royal Navy during World War 2 and is now owned and managed by Lewes District Council.

The masterplan has been informed by a site assessment, appraisal of the marketplace (including a demographic analysis) and tourism market along with a review of the wider strategic context.   Consultation has taken place with a range of stakeholders and an online survey was used to engage with the local community.   An options appraisal was carried out to evaluate future commercial opportunities and a funding review was carried out to identify lead sources of funding.  The masterplan sets out a programme of co-ordinated project initiatives to avoid piecemeal development.  It is important to recognise that the masterplan is sympathetic to the nearby South Downs National Park and Castle Hill Nature Reserve.
