Planning Solutions Consulting has been providing support and expertise to a range of clients across Kent to develop the visitor economy. We work with destinations, attractions, landowners, ports and local authorities to develop and enhance the visitor economy, sharing our knowledge and expertise to support change and sustainable growth. We also work with a network of specialists from landscape architects and archaeologists through to masterplanners and conservation architects.
Our work has included tourism development, market insight, feasibility studies, business planning and strategy development. Below we set out information on tourism, visitor attraction and leisure projects we have worked on in the area.
Port of Sheerness tourism study
Working for RPS, we carried out a study to review the tourism and leisure markets to identify options for tourism development within the working Port of Sheerness. The wider dockyard includes two Scheduled Ancient Monuments, a Grade I listed property, over 20 Grade II* listed properties and some 11 Grade II listed properties.
Ebbsfleet heritage visitor experience feasibility
Working alongside landscape architects and archaeologists for Kent Thameside, we carried out a feasibility study for introducing a Roman and Anglo-Saxon heritage visitor experience in Ebbsfleet.
Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest feasibility study
We prepared a feasibility study for Forestry England to develop Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest into a leading visitor destination in Kent. More recently, we worked with a landscape architect to prepare a spatial masterplan for the National Pinetum
Thanet Coast and Thanet District Council projects
We’ve carried out a number of projects for Thanet District Council, including:
- A feasibility study for developing a watersports club as a base for local clubs, incorporating a catering offer and visitor accommodation
- A detailed study of current tourism accommodation provision and future opportunities, to help guide an investment strategy to increase accommodation bedstock across the District
- A project to help shape the future of the Thanet Coast Project, meeting its priority objective of delivering a programme of public events and activities based on Thanet’s unique coastal environment and heritage
Kent County Council destination development
We managed a European-funded programme for Kent County Council to evaluate the potential for new tourism development in support of destination development across Kent and the wider Transmanche region.
East Kent country park business plan
Working with SEEDA and others, we prepared the business plan to develop a new country park with a focus on cycling, which has since been developed on a former colliery site in East Kent.
Bewl Water visitor offer development
Working with the senior management team at Bewl Water for MarkerStudy Group, we advised on opportunities to develop the visitor offer.
Tonbridge Castle feasibility study
We carried out an economic feasibility study to introduce a cafe within Tonbridge Castle.
Grove Ferry development advice
We advised Kent County Council on the development of Grove Ferry picnic site.
East Kent tourism strategy
We formed part of a team alongside the former South East England Tourist Board to research and develop a tourism strategy for the East Kent region.
The Kent Mining Museum
Advised the Kent Mining Museum on opportunities to enhance their retail offer.
What makes us different?
Our sister company Planning Solutions Limited manages a range of tourism and leisure businesses, including:
- Kent Life Heritage Farm Park
- CONKERS Discovery Centre
- The National Brewery Centre, formerly the Bass Museum (managed from 2010 to 2022)
- Cotswold Country Park and Beach
- A hotel
- Burton Bridge Brewery and Burton Bridge Inn
We understand how successful visitor experiences and tourism businesses work. We have found that this practical ‘hands-on’ operational experience helps to create a significant positive impact when working on development projects and brings a strong commercial realism to projects to help ensure projects are financially sustainable.
Clients have said a few words about our work
“Working with Richard was a great experience. Our team lacked the internal skills to deliver this project scope, so we appointed Richard at Planning Solutions Consulting Ltd to assess the feasibility of a new café operation at Tonbridge Castle. He provided a fully comprehensive, high-quality report that gave us a completely unbiased and thoroughly scoped perspective. Thanks to his expertise, our authority was able to make a confident, well-informed decision on whether to take this concept forward. I highly recommend Richard to any organisation needing expert consultancy for complex feasibility and commercial projects.” Laura French, Tonbridge Castle, Events and Customer Services Manager, Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council
