Kent Mining Museum retail consultant
Client: The Kent Mining Heritage Foundation
The Kent Mining Museum tells the story of coal mining in the region—its people, history, and legacy. The museum is located within Betteshanger Country Park. The museum shop serves a wide audience including families, school groups, heritage tourists and local visitors.
Planning Solutions Consulting was commissioned to carry out a strategic retail assessment to identify the way forward for retail offer at Kent Mining Museum. This was coupled with identifying practical hands-on operational improvements which will help to optimise the Kent Mining Museum shop, enhance its commercial performance, align with the museum’s mission and overall museum visitor experience. Our work included a review of the current shop operation including the retail product mix, layout and sales data. We also advised on product sourcing including items with a focus on mining history, geology, and educational value (e.g. fossils, minerals, themed kits, heritage goods) and products targeted at visitors to the country park. Suggestions to improve the layout, visual merchandising, signage and visitor flows were also provided. The project was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
