Heritage Tourism Development, Macedonia and Thrace, Northern Greece

Working with the British Council, we provided a heritage tourism development plan for Macedonia and Thrace, a relatively uncharted region of Northern Greece. In particular, we investigated the potential for sustainable cultural and heritage tourism to support the region’s wider tourism development.  We presented our recommendations to representatives from the State Tourism Ministry.

Our approach combined market analysis, stakeholder consultation, and site assessment to identify authentic heritage assets from archaeological sites and Byzantine monuments to traditional villages and rural landscapes, which are capable of supporting responsible, low-impact tourism growth. We also considered how activity holidays, such as walking, cycling, and nature-based experiences, could complement heritage attractions and extend visitor stays.  The resulting recommendations gave the State Tourism Ministry a practical framework for positioning Macedonia and Thrace as a distinctive cultural tourism destination, balancing economic opportunity with the protection of the region’s heritage and natural environment.
