South London Botanical Institute commercial development strategy

Heritage commercial development strategyClient: South London Botanical Institute

The South London Botanical Institute was established in 1910 to introduce people to the science, pleasure and importance of plants. The SLBI is based in its original building in Tulse Hill and it is a centre for education in the subject, incorporating library, herbarium, teaching programme and botanic garden. Working as sub-consultants to Bowles Green, PSC helped to prepare a commercial strategy. The objectives were to:

  • Identify ways of commercially harnessing the heritage and intellectual resources of the SLBI, in ways that do not compromise its charitable aims. Resources include the herbarium sheets, rare books, bespoke wallpaper, plants and varied botanical collections; venue and space hire; and technical expertise
  • To maximise profitability for the charity
  • To identify organisational changes required and means of achieving them
