Planning Solutions Consulting has worked with a range of clients on greenspace consultancy projects, including Hampshire County Council, Forestry England, Broadland District Council, Northumberland National Park Authority, Natural England, the RSPB, and Natural Resources for Wales.

Our work focuses on operational reviews and masterplans for parks, nature reserves and woodlands, identifying opportunities to enhance the visitor offer and generate additional income. This typically involves stakeholder and user consultation, analysis of the current operation, market analysis, review of planning and environmental considerations, and an options appraisal. We also prepare business plans to support funding applications to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other funders.

Some of the projects we have worked on include

  • Hampshire County Council: Prepared development plans for five country parks managed by the Council with a focus on enhancing the visitor experience and financial resilience of the parks.
  • Newark and Sherwood District Council: Visitor experience planning at Forest Corner in Edwinstowe, which is a gateway site into Sherwood Forest and the Major Oak
  • Nevis Landscape Partnership: Prepared a sustainable visitor/tourism management plan for Glen Nevis, the gateway to Ben Nevis
  • Epping Forest Heritage Trust: Identified and carried out an analysis of development proposals for the trust’s visitor centre at High Beach and advised on opportunities for public engagement activities within the forest.
  • North Northamptonshire Council: Feasibility study at Sywell Country Park and Irchester Country Park with a focus on enhancing the visitor experience and building financial resilience
  • Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority: Feasibility study to assess the opportunity to extend the boundary of the Fforest Fawr UNESCO Global Geopark
  • Breathe Barbury CIC: Carried out a feasibility study to develop a visitor centre at Barbury Castle Country Park
  • Buckinghamshire Council: Assessment of opportunities to develop and enhance the visitor experience at Denham Country Park, Black Park and Langley Park
  • Sussex Wildlife Trust: Working with the Senior Management Team, we prepared the business plan for the Rye Harbour Discovery Centre
  • South Wye Regeneration Partnership and the County of Herefordshire District Council: Carried out a feasibility study to assess the opportunity to develop a new country park to provide an outdoor recreation space to support the future growth in housing
  • Broadland District Council: Prepared a development masterplan and supporting business plan to develop Broadland Country Park
  • North West Leicestershire District Council: Prepared a development plan for Moira Furnace Museum and Country Park. Latterly commissioned to carry out a separate study related to the catering offer
  • Huntingdonshire District Council: Prepared a visitor experience masterplan to enhance the visitor offer at Riverside Park
  • RSBP: Carried out a review of development proposals for St Aidan’s Nature Park, near Leeds.
  • National Trust: A study on managing visitor pressures at Freshwater West Beach in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
  • Swindon Borough Council: Working with a landscape architect, we prepared a strategy for five country parks
  • North Northamptonshire Council: We prepared development plans for Sywell Country Park and Irchester Country Park
  • Trafford Council: We supported a landscape architect on a successful application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for Longford Park. Our work focused on preparing the business plan

This operational experience informs our consultancy advice. It gives us up-to-date trading data from actively managed sites rather than desk research alone, an understanding of what works in practice, and a firsthand sense of the pressures involved in running complex sites on a day-to-day basis
