Funicular railway consultancy: Saltburn Cliff Tramway
Client: Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council
The Saltburn Cliff Tramway is a historic funicular railway located in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire. The award-winning visitor attraction opened in 1884 and connects Saltburn’s upper promenade with the lower promenade and beach. It is the oldest water-balanced funicular railway still in operation in the UK having replaced an earlier vertical hoist built in 1870. The lower ticket office building is a Grade II* listed structure.
Planning Solutions Consulting Limited was commissioned to identify options to enhance the visitor experience and operational performance of the funicular railway. Our work focussed on carrying out a review of the operation, analysing relevant market trends and carrying out a programme of engagement with key stakeholders. We also identified opportunities to enhance the visitor experience and operational performance of the funicular railway and reviewed future governance and delivery options.
“We appointed Planning Solutions Consulting to review and develop an options appraisal for our Grade II listed, Tramway. This report has been delivered to a very high standard, with lots of thought and ambition for the Tramway to strive too. From start to finish the working relationship with Planning Solutions Consulting has been effortless, and I would highly recommend working with them.” Stephanie Costello, Visitor Destination and Engagement Manager, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council
