Client: Lochaline Quartz Sand
Working with Duncan Bryden Associates, we were commissioned to carry out a feasibility study to assess the concept of developing a discovery, learning and heritage centre linked to a working mine with a rich history in Lochaline, North West Scotland. The mine produces the best quality silica sand in the UK and i is unique as it is the only underground sand mine in Europe. It is currently operated by Lochaline Quartz Sand Ltd. (LQS), a joint venture between the Italian mining company Minerali Industriali and the global glass manufacturer NSG, owners of the famous Pilkington brand.
The feasibility study included a site assessment, analysis of the residential and tourism marketplaces and review of the strategic policy context. A number of development options, of different form and scale, were identified and evaluated. Advice of future governance was provided along with a financial analysis of the preferred development scenario.
We have worked on a range of tourism, heritage and visitor experience projects across Scotland please click here to find out more.
