Discovery, Learning and Heritage Centre Feasibility Study

Discovery Centre Feasibility studyDiscovery, Learning and Heritage Centre Feasibility Study

Client: Lochaline Quartz Sand
Working with Duncan Bryden Associates, we were commissioned to carry out a feasibility study to assess the concept of developing a discovery, learning and heritage centre linked to a working mine with a rich history in Lochaline, North West Scotland. The mine produces the best quality silica sand in the UK and is unique as it is the only underground sand mine in Europe. It is currently operated by Lochaline Quartz Sand Ltd. (LQS), a joint venture between the Italian mining company Minerali Industriali and the global glass manufacturer NSG, owners of the famous Pilkington brand.

The feasibility study included a site assessment, analysis of the residential and tourism marketplaces and review of the strategic policy context. A number of development options, of different form and scale, were identified and evaluated. Advice of future governance was provided along with a financial analysis of the preferred development scenario. We have worked on a range of tourism, heritage and visitor experience projects across Scotland please click here to find out more.
