Destination park feasibility study
Client: Bridgend County Borough Council
Maesteg Welfare Park was opened in 1925 and today is a popular community park within the county borough with playing fields, walking trails, community garden, sports pavilion, play areas, tennis courts and a bowls green. Maesteg Welfare Park is a destination park within the county borough.
Planning Solutions Consulting was commissioned to carry out a feasibility study to assess opportunities to engage the offer with a focus on the sports pavilion building, a large grassed area and the car park. Working closely with the Council’s Project Team and the Friends of Maesteg Welfare Park, our work included a detailed site assessment, review of the strategic policies alongside the planning context, a module of primary research and community engagement and an analysis of three case examples. An options appraisal identified a longlist of potential interventions to help improve the current offer. A scoring matrix was used to evaluate the individual uses to identify a ‘package of interventions.’ For the lead scenario to emerge from the options appraisal, a review of partnership working opportunities was carried out alongside identifying key risks and potential funding sources. Working with an architectural practice, floorplans and a supporting concept sketch was also prepared.
