Client: Royal Haskoning
We worked as part of a team led by Royal Haskoning carrying out a contingent valuation exercise to evaluate the environmental value of the coastline and beaches along a 7 kilometre stretch around Whitby in North Yorkshire. The coastline and beaches are key element of the wider destination. Our role was to assess the equivalent value of the coastline for community, tourism and amenity uses, alongside fishing and other commercial uses.
Following a contingent valuation approach we carried out an extensive programme of primary research among residents, local businesses and tourists to assess the importance of the beach and coastline to their enjoyment and quality of life. We also involved stakeholders within the research process. The final work based on our market intelligence is intended to establish the relative importance of continuing to protect coastal defences in the area.
