Canal boat passenger feasibility study
Client: Blaby District Council
Planning Solutions Consulting were commissioned to explore the potential to introduce a canal boat passenger or water taxi service on the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Line) to add to the critical mass of tourism facilities and to provide an alternative transport option for local residents. Our work focused on conducting a demand analysis, assessing target markets, and projecting passenger numbers. Consideration was also given to trip frequency and any seasonal issues. Potential business partners and attractions along the canal, which could benefit and be points to stop at or pick up from, were also identified. An assessment of the operating models (commercial, Council, community, and charity) was conducted. As part of the work, extensive consultation was carried out with a range of stakeholders. Options for departure/arrival points and moorings for the craft were also identified. Drawing together the above research, a trading profile was prepared that broke down revenue, cost, and income projections to fully assess the viability of this project.
