Blackness is located on the Firth of Forth, there are views of the bridges, coastal walks, a beach and the natural environment of the Forth shoreline which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Blackness is home to Blackness Castle which has seen a significant growth in visitor numbers – the castle was used as a filming location for Outlander and several other films. The John Muir Way and National Cycle Route No.76 pass Blackness. This makes Blackness a population destination for visitors and presents a number of challenges.
Planning Solutions Consulting were commissioned to prepare a Strategic Tourism and Infrastructure Development Plan for Blackness. This involved an extensive programme of community engagement, stakeholder consultant, reviewing case examples and desktop research. Strategic Tourism and Infrastructure Development Plan set out a vision and practical opportunities to enhance the visitor experience and community offer. The Strategic Tourism and Infrastructure Development Plan is underpinned by the following responsible tourism objectives for infrastructure development – environmental sustainability, economic sustainability, cultural sustainability and social sustainability.
