Blackness is located on the Firth of Forth, there are views of the bridges, coastal walks, a beach and the natural environment of the Forth shoreline which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Blackness is home to Blackness Castle which has seen a significant growth in visitor numbers – the castle was used as a filming location for Outlander and several other films. The John Muir Way and National Cycle Route No.76 pass Blackness. This makes Blackness a popular destination for visitors and presents a number of visiotor management challenges.

Planning Solutions Consulting were commissioned to prepare a Strategic Tourism and Infrastructure Development Plan for Blackness, with a focus on visitor management planning. This involved an extensive programme of community engagement, stakeholder consultation, reviewing case examples and desktop research. Strategic Tourism and Infrastructure Development Plan set out a vision and practical opportunities to enhance the visitor experience and community offer. The Strategic Tourism and Infrastructure Development Plan is underpinned by the following responsible tourism objectives for infrastructure development – environmental sustainability, economic sustainability, cultural sustainability and social sustainability.
