Gareth Gregory is the former Managing Director of the Big Pit Museum in South Wales. Gareth helped to establish the Big Pit Mining Museum in Blaenafon and spent fifteen years as its director. During this time he helped found the Gwent Association of Tourist Attractions and served on advisory committees and panels for the Wales Tourist Board, local and regional tourism bodies, Springboard and the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.
While at Big Pit, he was responsible for raising the funds for and managing the Implementation of three major phases of development, including the initiation of a multi-million pound Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) project which enabled the museum to become the National Museum of Mining, part of the National Museums and Galleries of Wales.
He also served as a non-executive Director of Menter a Busnes.
Gareth has also worked in cultural tourism as Head of the Eisteddfod and Festivals Department of Urdd Gobaith Cymru and at the former Wales Tourist Board, where he headed the department responsible for grants and loans for tourism development.
Gareth has worked as expert adviser and associate monitor for the Heritage Lottery Fund since being appointed to the Fund’s panel of expert advisers in 2001. As an Associate Monitor / Mentor he has worked on the Business Planning aspects of large projects including Llanelly House, the Shire Hall, Monmouth, Narberth Museum, Newbridge Institute and Memorial Hall, and Penarth Pier Pavilion (all at various stages of assessment or development) as well as acting as independent assessor for numerous major project applications in Wales and Northern Ireland.
