Peak District National Park

The Peak District National Park Authority (PDNPA) is to invest £2.25m towards the improvement of its cycle trials.
They have secured funding from the Department of Transport and Cycling England and plan to use it to improve the quality of off-road cycling trails and promote leisure cycling in the National Park.

An indoor skydiving centre has opened at the Trafford Quays Leisure Village in Manchester. The centre cost £4.4m and contains a 14ft diameter tunnel and a 35ft high flight chamber, making it the largest in the UK.

Surfing Museum

Talks are in place over the possibility of developing a permanent home for the proposed Museum of British Surfing at a site close to Saunton Sands, North Devon. The museum has received approval for 2 development grants, Leader 4 initiative and the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’s sustainable development fund.

A £7.5m Forestry Commission led initiative is to see six off-road cycling hubs created across the South West England to transform the region into a global destination for cycling.  It will see the development of purpose built cycling trails, bike hire facilities, cafes and improvement areas.

Adventure tourism

A redevelopment of the Tees Barrage International Water Course on the River Tees has been announced. It will include redesigning the main course, building a second shorter course and installing 4 large 12m x 3m Archimedes Screws, which can create guaranteed conditions. The scheme is funded by ONE North East, Stockton Council, Tees Active, Middlesbrough Council and Sport England.  Work is due to begin in September and is a proposed site for the 2012 Olympic Games.
